Getting ready to go….

Rose Collars by Jenne Giles
Bags are packed. Last-minute-laundry is being done. We are just about ready to go.
I’m even bringing a rice cooker on this trip so that we can cook for ourselves, which will be a first. Each time we do this, the process of getting ready for out-of-town shows gets a little more streamlined.
Looking forward to an adventure in Boston!

One week to go to CraftBoston! It’s getting down to the wire…..
Getting back to abnormal

It was a busy week at the ACC Baltimore Show!
I had an amazing time: meeting many new artists, including a number of outstanding feltmakers which made it super “awesome” (my new favorite word), and also reconnecting with friends from previous shows. I had a great time sharing the booth with my friend, Heidi. It was nice to share the experience and made the whole trip much more meaningful! Here is a picture that she took of me demonstrating my wares.
Back home now and catching up. CraftBoston is not too far away….
Off to ACC Baltimore!

The felt is made, the bags are packed, and I’m off to the show on the early plane tomorrow!! Super psyched…but also some pre-show butterflies in my stomach.
Here’s hoping for a great show and getting a chance to see the town! Baltimore is such an amazing city: Edgar Allen Poe, John Waters, The Museum of Visionary Arts, seafood galore, sailboats, schooners, and beautiful architecture.
[Update] Great article about SDA invitational artists to ACC
Jenne Giles
It is difficult to talk about Jenne Giles without bringing up her rose blossom scarves and collars. Lush in color and crafted with the delicate touch of a real flower, these pieces are stunning. It would be a mistake, however, to only fixate on these pieces. Giles, invited to show in Baltimore by the Surface Design Association, has a painterly grace and an excellent sense for color. Giles also creates felt paintings, which are playful fields of color and shape that look as delightful as they would feel. Working in felt, Jenne becomes very close to her material, and though her pieces have a pristine, natural look, she puts hard tactile work into making them. As she describes it, “Each piece begins in a painterly manner as brushstrokes of colorful wool are layered to form a composition in fiber. Hot water is applied and the piece is then worked by hand, in a method similar to working with clay, by rolling, scrubbing, and manipulating the fiber to form a wearable felted fabric.” Show-goers in Baltimore will be lucky to see these efforts first hand. See more of Jenne Giles’ wearable artwork and felt paintings.

Here is an image of the back-less felt dress from last Saturday’s shoot. I’m so impressed with how well the image captures that grand sense of gusty romance and look forward to seeing the full series, which looked to be heading in a very Romeo & Juliet direction. Somewhere there is an orchestra swelling and a lone violin cascading through the heart-strong melody…
This will wrap up the flurry of updates lately. One more week to go before ACC Baltimore which will entail a lot of shipping, preparing, packaging, steaming and scrubbing to be ready. These events are both exciting and terrifying, but I try to remind myself that is often where the fun begins.

Good news regarding the Tendril Wrap: this hand-felted, shibori-dyed piece has been acquired by the Hong Kong Design Institute as part of their Fashion Archive!
